6:30 am, I get up, move the bedding away, switch on the VHF Radio for the weather news, brush my teethe, wash a bit with a minimum of water, prepare breakfast (oatmeal or eggs/omlett) and some coffee, clean dishes, and store everything away which might be thrown around or fall down. Next I check the engine oil, switch on the chart plotter, GPS, computer chart plotter (make sure the right com port is selected), depth sounder, wind speed indicator, connect the auto pilot and start the engine. It takes me about one hour to do all that and at 7:30 Ted calls on VHF and we decide what we are going to do that day. I am still in the ICW as the position to cross over to the Bahamas is best from Miami - going to the Exumas. We left Vero Beach on January 29th after spending 8 Days there. It was a nice break and I could enjoy finally the warm weather - and some bugs too! No one gets bitten but me! We spend the next night at the Peck Lake on anchor. Gail, Ted's spouse, prepared some pick nick and we had a great afternoon at the Atlantic Beach. The land between the ICW and the Atlantic here is just a small strip of sand and brushes - 150 feet maybe. Next Day we moved only a short distance, 30 ml to Palm Beach Nord. A supermarket was close buy and some shopping could be done. From there it was again only 34 ml to Boca Raton, we arrived here at 3:30pm as we had to wait for 17(!) bridges to be opened for us. Tomorrow we will stay here, do some repairs on Ted's boat (the throttle cable broke) and continue on Saturday to Ford Lauderdale. Position 26.20758N and 80.04420W
Es ist 6:30 morgens, ich stehe auf, packe das Bettzeug weg, schalte das VHF Radion ein fuer den Wetterbericht, putze Zaehne, wasch und rasier mich mit so wenig Wasser wie moeglich, bereite das Freuhstueck (Haferflocken oder Omlett) und koche Kaffee, nach dem Essen wird alles abgewaschen und weggeraeumt. Als naechstes muss der Oelstand im Motor controlliert werden, der Chartplotter im Cockpit wird eingeschaltet, das GPS, Computer Chartplotter, Tiefenmesser, Windstaerkemesser wird ebenfalls eingeschaltet, der Autopilot wird angeschlossen und dann wird der Motor gestartet. Das alles braucht ungefeahr eine Stunde und um 7:30 ruft Ted auf VHF an und wir entscheiden wie weit wir diesmal motoren werden. Ich bin immer noch im ICW da die Position fuer eine Golfstrom Querung (Ziel ist Exumas) von Miami aus besser ist. Ausserdem wollen wir uns auch Miami ansehen. Wir haben Vero Beach am 29 Januar nach 8 Tagen Aufenthalt verlassen. Es war eine schoene Unterbrechung der Reise und ich konnte endlich das warme Wetter geniessen - und die Muecken dazu! Die naechste Nacht haben wir in Peck Lake vor Anker verbracht. Gail, Ted's Frau, hat eine Picknick Korb vorbereitet und so konnten wir am Strand (Atlantic) Wein und Greek Salat geniessen. Zwischen dem Atlantic und dem ICW ist es an vielen Stellen nur 50 bis 200 Meter breit. Am naechsten Tag (im ICW kann man nicht in der Nacht unterwegas sein - zu eng und unbeleuchtete Tonnen) nur 30 ml bis Palm Beach Nord gefahren. Ein Superkarkt war in der Naehe und so konnten wir auch Proviant auffuellen. Von hier sind wir dann weitere 34 ml bis Boca Raton gefahren, wo wir um 3:30 ankamen; 17 Bruecken mussten geoeffnet wwerden damit wir durchfahren konnten! Die Bruecken hier in Florida sind meistens zu niedrig fuer Segelboote. Es ist jetzt 8:00 Uhr Abends und der Wind heult in den Wanten und laesst den Windgenerator in hohen Toenen sausen. Schlaf wir schwierig wenn so viel Wind blaesst. Wir werden Morgen hier bleiben und einige Reparaturen an Ted,s Boot machen. Der Gaszug ist gebrochen. Am Samstag werden wir dann nach Fort Lauderdale aufbrechen. Position 26.20758N and 80.04420

I needed 3 days for the 120 ml run from Daytona Beach to Vero Beach on the ICW. Vero Beach is a much protected harbor and the City did put out moorings to tie on. In Titusville I had to spend one day at anchor as the weather was bad. Another sailing boat next to me – there was no one aboard - broke the anchor chain and landed on the rocks. Ted and I found a more protected corner behind a bridge in Melbourne for the next night. Here in Vero Beach I will rest for a couple of Days, work on and clean the boat before taking on the next leg.
Fuer die 120 Meilen im ICW von St. Augustine bis Vero Beach habe ich 3 Tage gebraucht. Vero Beach hat einen sehr geschuetzten Ankerplatz und die Stadt hat Moorings installiert an denen man festmachen kann. In Titusville lagen wir vor Anker fuer die Nacht, als das Wetter immer schlechter wurde. Gewittersturme und veraenderte Windrichtungen machten die Nacht und den naechsten Tag sehr ungemuetlich. In der Nacht trieb ein Boot neben mir ab und landete auf den Felsen am Strand. Am naechsten Tag haben Ted und ich dann einen mehr geschuetzten Platz hinter einer Bruecke in Melbourne gefunden. Ich werde die naechsten Tage here in Vero Beach bleiben und am Boot arbeiten, Waesche waschen usw. Position 27.39 39 06N und 80.22 18 18 W

Von St. Augustine bin ich am Donnerstag 17.1. in Richtung Daytona Beach aufgebrochen. Ein Canadier – Ted Jenkinson, mit einem 30 Fuss Boot „Ragtime“ – hatte die gleiche Idee und so sind wir zusammen in Richtung Daytona Beach aufgebrochen. Offshore war sehr starker Wind aus Sueden mit hohen Wellen und so waren wir doch froh im Intracoastal Waterway zu sein. Dieser parallel zur Kueste laufende Wasserweg ist manchmal sehr schmal und oefter sehr flach. Wenn man nicht aufpasst ist man sehr schnell auf Grund gelaufen ,ist mir bis jetzt schon 4 mal passiert; Miles und Francesca hatten weniger Glueck - an einem Tag waren es 17 Mal das sie Grundkontakt hatten – segeln auf dem Waschbrett J ). Ich hatte Ted fuer einen speziellen Anlass heute zum Essen eingeladen – wer will schon am Geburtstag alleine im Restaurant sitzen – ich nicht. Das war eine tolle Abwechselung nach dem doch eher Camping aehnlichen Buechsen Dinner die ich sosnst so hatte. Morgen gehts dann weiter nach Titusville und dann zur Vero Beach. Das ist so eine Art Treffpunkt fuer die Cruising Gemeinde. Nach ein paar Tagen Pause werde ich dann in Richtung Miami weiterziehen. Pos: 29.12179 N und 81.00162
I left St.Augustine on Thursday January 17th in Direction Daytona Beach. Ted Jenkinson – a Canadian wit his 30 foot boat “Ragtime”, accompanied me. There was a strong wind offshore and “box” waves outside and we where glad to be in the ICW. The ICW gets very shallow and narrow down here. I run aground 4 times – Miles and Francesca did had less luck , they run aground on one day 17 times! Sailing on the washboard - as Francesca put it. Because of the special event – I invited Ted to have dinner with me in e nice restaurant. This was a nice change compared to the camping like tin dinners I have normally. Tomorrow I will continue towards Titusville and after that to Vero Beach. This is a kind of hang out place for the cruising community. After a couple of days rest und cleaning up the boat – it gets dirty in the ICW, I will continue towards Miami – Coconut groove.

I left Savannah - now without Scott who had to go back to Maine - on January 5th after the mechanics changed another board in the panel. The ride down to Jacksonville was just miserable. Only 5 Knots wind, but waves that did throw the boat from one side on the other. A good thing was that it was not cold anymore, the Golf stream is close to shore and the temperature was 60F. I had to slow down in order to arrive with the the first light in the morning at the estuary of the St. Johns river. The weather news informed me during the night that there would be fog - and they where right. But the radar and chart plotter guided me around all bends and obstacles in the river. 16 miles upstream, I arrived at noon in Downtown Jacksonville. I tied up on a marina, rented a car and drove to Knoxville Tennessee to see my parents-in-law and sister-in-law. It was good to see them and spending a day together, talking to them and friends who arrived. I drove back on Tuesday and felt kind of exhausted. I called Miles who was still in Beaufort and he said that they also had a hard time coming down the coast. See sickness and the cold weather made this a depressing trip. I hope that with the arrival in a warmer climate and the absence of time constrains will eventually let me enjoy this "living the dream".
Nach meiner Ruekkehr aus den Bahamas bin ich dann am 5. Januar alleine - Scott musste zurueck nach Maine - in Richtung Sueden aufgebrochen. Die Mechaniker hatten noch ein Teil am Bedienungspanel getauscht und somit war alles repariert. Die Fahrt nach Jacksonville war miserable! Es war nicht genug Wind, nur 5 Kn dafuer aber Wellen die das Boot von einer Seite auf die andere warfen. Bei der Schaukelei konnte ich kaum schlafen, lediglich die Temperatur so um die 15 Grad war ertraeglich. Der Golfstrom ist hier schon sehr nahe and der Kueste und beeinflusst das Klima erheblich. Um beim ersten Tageslicht an der Muendung des St. John Flusses anzukommen musste ich langsame Fahrt machen. Der Wetterbericht sprach von dichtem Nebel an der Kueste. Die Ansteuerungstonnen waren noch zu erkennen und danach nur noch dichtester Nebel. Aber das Radar und der Chartplotter haben mich sicher um alle Kurven und Hindernisse geleitet. Fuer die 16 Meilen bis Downtown Jacksonville habe ich 4 Stunden gebraucht. Eine Marina suchen das Boot festmachen und aufraeumen hat dann noch mal 2 Stunden gedauert bis ich dann so gegen 3 Uhr im gemieteten Auto sass und in Richtung Knoxville Tennessee fuhr um meine Schwiegereltern zu besuchen. Die Fahrt dauerte 7 Stunden und ich war doch froh endlich gegen Mitternacht im Bett zu liegen. Der naechste Tag war ausgefuellt mit berichten von der Reise und mit der Ankunft von Freunden meiner Schwiegereltern die alle mit mir reden wollten. Am Dienstag bin ich dann wieder zurueck nach Jacksonville gefahren und fuehlte mich doch ziemlich "ausgelaugt". Ich habe Miles angerufen der noch in Beaufort war, er erzeahlte das er und Franceska auch eine harte Zeit mit dieser Reise hatten. Beide waren Seekrank und das kalte Wetter dazu machten diesen Trip richtig depressiv. Ich konnte ihm da nur zustimmen; aber wir hoffen alle das das waermere Klima in Florida und die Abwesenheit von Zeit limits dazu fuehren das wir endlich "living the dream - oder lebe deinen Traum" geniessen koennen!
